“I was hanging out with Sly Stone and his band one time over at Doris Day’s house in Beverley Hills. They had a bunch of girlfriends with them, white chicks. One of the neighbors called the police saying some black guys had these white women, must have thought they were kidnapped or shit. The cops turned up at the house all serious. I had to flush all the cocaine down the toilet, I didn’t have a gun but we made sure there were no drugs anywhere in case they came in. The girls were just friends of the band. They had to phone around to get in touch with Terry Melcher, Doris Day’s son who was a record producer and a friend of Sly’s. Eventually they tracked him down at a restaurant – remember there were no cell phones in those days – it was pretty tense but he came back and cooled them down and they went on their way, left us alone. This shot was taken in San Jose at the Northern California Folk Rock Festival.”
