Aptly named for the special rapport Jim developed with his subjects, whose trust for his integrity and eye earned Marshall a rarely granted access, Trust is the first of Jim’s books to focus on his color photography. While a few of Jim’s most famous images are to be found within this volume, what excites us most about presenting Trust are the equally stunning number of never or rarely seen color as well as black & white images gathered within.

As with all his work, Trust reflects the richness of the musical world that Jim is so proud to have chronicled. Not as some anonymous “fly on the wall,” but rather instead as a genuine part of the culture. Whether it's the rarely seen cover shot of Janis Joplin at an outdoor concert, Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash on the set of Cash’s TV special, Monk onstage at the Monterey Jazz Festival, an alternate color shot of the Allman Brothers’ Fillmore East cover, a rare 1967 portrait of Jerry Garcia and Pigpen, Aretha Franklin at the Fillmore West, Sly Stone at a San Jose folk-rock festival, Joan Baez at Newport, John Lee Hooker at home with his guitar, Hendrix in Berkeley, the Stones and Santana at Altamont, or Jim’s fisheye shot from behind the Woodstock stage—Jim was there.

In addition to his instinct and natural eye, Jim is also a great craftsman. In order to honor that craft great care has been taken to reproduce as faithfully as possible the images in Trust, whose photos were edited by Dave Brolan, with an introduction by Jason Fine, Executive Editor of Rolling Stone. Trust is a testament to Marshall’s deep love of his craft, and of his subjects.
